Darbhanga Airport

Airport History

Darbhanga Airport (IATA: DBR, ICAO: VE89) is in Darbhanga, Bihar, and operates as a civil enclave within the Indian Air Force’s Darbhanga Air Force Station. Historically, the airfield was developed for military operations and remained under the control of the Indian Air Force for several decades.

Recognizing the growing demand for air connectivity in North Bihar, the Government of India selected Darbhanga under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) Regional Connectivity Scheme. Scheduled commercial operations commenced on 8 November 2020, making Darbhanga one of the most successful airports launched under the UDAN programme.

Since the commencement of civilian operations, passenger demand has significantly exceeded initial expectations, transforming Darbhanga into one of Bihar’s fastest-growing airports. The airport has rapidly emerged as a vital transportation hub for North Bihar and neighbouring regions of Nepal.

Market Intelligence

Darbhanga Airport has become one of India’s most successful regional airports, recording exceptional passenger growth within a short period of commencing commercial operations. The airport serves one of the country’s most densely populated regions, where air travel demand was historically underserved.

A significant proportion of passengers comprises migrant workers, business travellers, students, government officials, medical travellers, and pilgrims travelling between Bihar and metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. The airport also attracts passengers from the bordering districts of Nepal, further expanding its catchment area.

Passenger traffic has consistently increased since 2020, frequently surpassing the designed capacity of the temporary terminal. This sustained growth has prompted the development of a new integrated passenger terminal, along with expanded apron facilities and associated infrastructure.

From a commercial perspective, Darbhanga Airport presents substantial opportunities in airport advertising, food & beverage, retail, passenger amenities, digital media, mobility services, and commercial concessions. As passenger numbers continue to rise and infrastructure expands, the airport is expected to become one of Eastern India’s most attractive regional aviation markets.

SirriS Intelligence Summary

Darbhanga Airport represents one of the most successful examples of regional aviation development under India’s UDAN scheme. Its remarkable passenger growth, strategic location, and expanding infrastructure make it a high-potential airport for commercial and infrastructure investments.
