Airport History
Amritsar Airport, officially known as Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, is located approximately 11 kilometres northwest of Amritsar city in Punjab. Named after the fourth Sikh Guru and the founder of Amritsar, the airport has evolved into one of North India’s most significant international aviation hubs.
Originally developed as a domestic airport, it gained international status in the early 2000s to accommodate the growing demand for overseas travel, particularly from Punjab’s large Non-Resident Indian (NRI) population. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) subsequently undertook major infrastructure upgrades, including the construction of a modern integrated terminal, runway enhancements, apron expansion, and advanced navigation systems.
Today, Amritsar Airport serves as Punjab’s second busiest airport after Chandigarh and is one of India’s key gateways for international travel, connecting the state to destinations across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and domestic cities throughout India.
