Airport History
Pakyong Airport is India’s first greenfield airport constructed in the Himalayan state of Sikkim. Located approximately 30 kilometres south of Gangtok, the airport was developed to provide the state with direct air connectivity, overcoming decades of dependence on Bagdogra Airport in West Bengal. Due to the challenging mountainous terrain and limited availability of flat land, the project involved complex engineering techniques, including extensive slope stabilization and reinforced earth structures, making it one of India’s most technically challenging airport developments.
The project was undertaken by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), with construction beginning in 2009. After overcoming significant geological and environmental challenges, the airport was inaugurated on 24 September 2018 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. Pakyong Airport marked a major milestone in improving connectivity to Sikkim, supporting tourism, trade, healthcare accessibility, and regional economic development. Despite weather-related operational challenges associated with its mountainous location, the airport continues to play a vital role in connecting Sikkim with the rest of the country.
